Hallam Foe is well into post-production and is generating some insightful commentary, both in terms of the movie itself and the concept of blogging as a marketing tool/device.

Blogging sage Hugh Macloed of www.gapingvoid.com and Colin Kennedy of www.getyourpeople.com make some interesting points in the search to quanitfy both the film and the merits of the production blog.

Collision recently went through Slingshot Studio’s development workshop, in association with PAL. The week long retreat provided both a fantastic testing ground for the work already achieved on the script and gave valuable insight into the ways it might be developed and gleamed further.

The video below comes from the first full script read through at end of the week. The film will soon begin casting, but it was fun to see some well known faces experiment with the roles, for the purposes of this development lab only of course.

“The Atelier selects every year about twenty feature-film projects throughout the world, and invites their directors to the Festival de Cannes to put them in touch with professionals. They can thus access international financing and speed up the transition to directing.

The laureates are selected according to the quality of their projects and previous films, as well as the state of advancement of their financing plan.”

This year both Black Box and The Quagmire have been selected for participation. Further details can be found by visiting the Festival’s website.

“Hallam Foe” starts shooting in Scotland with Jamie Bell in his first leading role since Billy Elliot.

Production has begun on David Mackenzie’s HALLAM FOE featuring Jamie Bell in his first starring role in a UK film since Billy Elliot. Co-starring Sophia Myles (“Tristan + Isolde”, “Thunderbirds”), Claire Forlani (“Meet Joe Black”) and Ciarán Hinds (“Munich”), HALLAM FOE is produced by Gillian Berrie, written by Ed Whitmore and David Mackenzie, based on the novel by Peter Jinks, and executive produced by Matthew Justice.

HALLAM FOE is a magical story of redemptive love, loss and life on the rooftops of Edinburgh. Young Hallam is almost over the sudden death of his mother when he begins to suspect that his beautiful step-mother may have had a hand in her death, and it doesn’t help that Hallam fancies her rotten. Fleeing his step-mum, he arrives in Edinburgh where he falls in love with a gorgeous girl who happens to look just like his mother…

HALLAM FOE will shoot for six weeks on location in Edinburgh and Peeblesshire and in studios in Glasgow.

HALLAM FOE is produced by Sigma Films and Lunar Films, and financed by Film Four, Scottish Screen, Glasgow Film Finance Ltd. and Ingenious Film Partners. Independent Film Sales are handling international sales and BVI (UK) will distribute the film in the UK.

Jamie Bell literally leapt into public recognition playing the title role in Stephen Daldry’s worldwide smash hit “Billy Elliot”. His eclectic range of subsequent films include Peter Jackson’s “King Kong”, Thomas Vinterberg’s “Dear Wendy”, David Gordon Green’s “Undertow” and Douglas McGrath’s star-studded adaptation of “Nicholas Nickleby”. He will shortly be seen in Clint Eastwood’s “Flag of our Fathers”.

Sophia Myles is best known for her portrayal of the elegant International Rescue associate Lady Penelope in Jonathan Frakes’ “Thunderbirds”. She can currently be seen alongside James Franco in Kevin Reynolds’ tragic love story “Tristan + Isolde” and has also appeared in both “Underworld” films, “From Hell” and “Mansfield Park”.

Claire Forlani featured in Lexi Alexander’s 2005 film about football hooliganism, “Green Street”, and her other credits include “Mystery Man”, “Meet Joe Black” and “Basquiat”.

Ciarán Hinds recently appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” and as Julius Caesar in the HBO/BBC TV series “Rome”. His other films include “Calendar Girls”, “Veronica Guerin” and “Road to Perdition”.

HALLAM FOE is director David Mackenzie’s fourth feature film, following the erotic thriller “Asylum” for which its star, Natasha Richardson, won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress; “Young Adam”, starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Mortimer which won a host of awards including four Scottish BAFTAs; and the tense thriller “The Last Great Wilderness”.

For it’s inaugural post here’s a little information regarding the company’s history and a glimpse at our upcoming projects.

Matthew Justice launched Lunar Films in May 2004. That year Lunar co-produced Cédric Klapisch’s “Les Poupées Russes” (The Russian Dolls), starring Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris and Kelly Reilly. The film opened in France on June 15th 2005 and scooped 3,000,000 admissions during it’s theatrical debut. It is currently playing across Europe, Japan and the US.

Lunar has just completed multiple Palm D’Or nominee Raoul Ruiz’s “Klimt” starring John Malkovich, Veronika Ferres, Saffron Burrows and Stephen Dillane, which premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival in January 2006. The film is scheduled for Theatrical release soon.

Lunar also completed its co-production of Stephen Bradley’s Boy Eats Girl in April 2005, an Anglo Irish teen horror picture starring Samantha Mumba that released in Ireland in September 2005.

Lunar Films was created from the production subsidiary that Matthew set up for leading UK financier: Invicta Capital.

Prior to joining Invicta, Matthew was Stephen Norrington’s producing partner for seven years. Starting with “Death Machine” at Pinewood Studios in 1993, the film was a $3m tongue in cheek robot romp that got the two of them noticed. As a result Stephen was hired to direct “Blade” starring Wesley Snipes, which Matthew joined him on as a Producer. “Blade” has gone on to gross over $200m. After this Matthew produced Norrington’s award winning “The Last Minute” starring Max Beesley, Jason Isaacs, Kate Ashfield and Tom Bell.

Between Norrington pictures, Matthew won several awards for producing duties on Michel Gondry’s commercials for Levi’s and Smirnoff.

Matthew is currently Executive Producing David Mackenzie’s new film “Hallam Foe” and also preparing a number of new films, including “Black Box” with Studio Canal, “Johnny Mad Dog” with Mathieu Kassovitz’s company MNP, which he is producing in collaboration with Will Clarke from Optimum, and “FAKE!” with Mike Downey and Sam Taylor from F&ME.
